A yorker is a ball that pitches right at the batter’s feet — ideally on the base of the stumps or under the toes. It is one of the hardest balls to face in cricket because there’s no room to bring the bat down to swing at it.

The best fast bowlers in the world — think Jasprit Bumrah or Lasith Malinga — save the yorker for the last overs of a T20 match when batters are trying to hit sixes. Even a half-decent yorker can shut down a big over.

Why it’s so hard to hit

To hit a yorker, the batter has to either jam the bat down quickly (a “dig out”) or try to flick it away to leg. Mistime it and you get bowled. Get under it and it’s caught. Most yorkers end with one of those two results.

My takeaway

Don’t try to slog a yorker. Just stay calm, drop the bat down fast, and live to play the next ball.
